This year, because of the inclusion of the FT Euro 500, our UK list has grown significantly to 102 companies and are this largest list from a single country in the survey. This means that almost 50 per cent of the British companies are reviewed for the first time. British American Tobacco with the score of 67.5 wins the H&H Webranking UK 2009 after a 4th place in 2008. Second place goes to last year’s winner Aviva (66.75). Cadbury with 63.5 takes the bronze, climbing 9 steps from last year.
The average score for UK-based companies has decreased since last year; primarily due to the fact that more (and smaller) companies are included this year, together with harder screening in the ranking protocol. Even though the overall score is still good for UK companies, it is surprising that no UK company manages to get over 70 points. In our view, some top contenders should be from the UK. There are for examples still no British among the 30 best companies in Europe.
CSR and WAI-standards
British company's strength lies in CSR-related information and the section examining the structure and technology on the website. Accessibility standards are for example very high among the British companies. Our analysis is that UK dominates the CSR field due to an own sustainability index, the FTSE 4 Good and some large oil and tobacco companies who are strong contenders and an inspiration for others. 4 British companies received full score in the CSR section, no other country can brag with this solid performance.

Missing debt and financing information
British companies are unfortunately still behinds European peers in financial information. The gap between demands and supply for financial information has truly increased this year. The investor relations paper IR Magazine wrote an article (from H&H Webranking statistics) on this topic. Link to the article in IR magazine.
